THE POWER OF PEAT.

Heavily peated. Coloring-free. Matured entirely on Islay.

The freedom to challenge and to pioneer is central to the heart and soul of Bruichladdich. Above all we believe in authenticity. That a whisky should speak of the land and of the people who crafted it.

Two miles south of Bruichladdich, hugging the shore of Loch Indaal, lies the village of Port Charlotte and ruins of Lochindaal Distillery, that ran spirit for 100 years between 1829 and 1929. Our heavily peated Port Charlotte single malts are a tribute to the men who once worked this great, now silent, distillery and the skills and legacy they passed on.

  • Bruichladdich distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers. The Harveys were a dynastic whisky family with over a century of distillery ownership, including Glasgow's Yoker and Dundas hill distilleries. The three brothers decided to combine their expertise to build a third Harvey distillery: Robert (23) designed it, john (31) had the distilling experience, and William (32) had the money.

Following his visit here in 1885 AlfRed Barnard wrote: "Peat only is used in drying the malt, fiRed in open chauffeurs", a testament supported in a few surviving faded photographs showing the huge peat stacks waiting to be fed to the kiln fires.
